School District to Get $6 Million for Upgrades
The Santa Ana Unified School District will get $6 million in federal funds interest-free to renovate five high schools and strengthen academic programs designed to increase graduation rates.
The loan will come from the 2002 Qualified Zone Academy Bond Program. To qualify, the district had to raise $600,000--10% of the amount being sought--from the private sector.
District officials said they raised $2 million.
Twenty-six school districts competed statewide for $47.1 million in federal funds.
The Santa Ana system was one of only nine to get their full funding requests.
