The American Cinematheque presents “Poet of Doom: A Tribute to Werner Herzog,” an eight-film retrospective of the eccentric German director’s work, beginning tonight with a sneak preview of his latest film, “Invincible.” Part of the New German Cinema movement of the ‘60s and ‘70s, Herzog later established his own unique presence in world cinema through his work with actor Klaus Kinski (“Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” “Nosferatu, the Vampyre”) and unconventional documentaries such as “My Best Fiend,” a chronicle of his collaboration with Kinski. Herzog’s work became the stuff of documentary in Les Blank’s film, “Burden of Dreams,” an account of the arduous making of “Fitzcarraldo” in the Peruvian Amazon. When 21-year-old tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton arrived on the New York jazz scene in 1976, his classic 1930s-’40s-style sound caught people’s attention partly because it was out of step with the times. Since then, Hamilton’s sound has evolved to embrace both the traditional and the modern. His is one of those rare voices that is instantly recognizable, even to the casual listener. Hamilton and company will do two shows per night through Saturday.

KXLU-FM (88.9) remains one of the city’s last strongholds of maverick music, and some musicians whose only conceivable airplay comes on such scrappy college-rock outlets--including Mike Watt with his bass-drums-organ trio, veteran shard-rockers Saccharine Trust and the up-and-coming Dengue Fever--pitch for the annual KXLU Fund Razor. In the bar area, station personnel will be the acting DJs.

When bank accounts drop, so do six pairs of trousers in “The Full Monty,” the Broadway musical about unemployed Buffalo, N.Y., steelworkers who form a male striptease act in hopes of earning a buck. Terrence McNally adapted the British film for the stage, and Jerry Yazbek wrote the songs for the show, now on tour and being given its Orange County premiere.
