From Staff and Wire Reports

An anonymous benefactor has donated almost $10 million to three nonprofit organizations, including the senior center where she enjoyed lunch for $1.85.

The woman, who was in her 90s, died in the past year. She was a frequent user of the Avenidas senior center, which offers everything from yoga and Internet classes to health screening and transportation.

“It was so unexpected,” said Lisa Hendrickson, executive director for the center. “We were so important to her.”

Hendrickson said she doesn’t yet know how much money the center will actually receive, and the paperwork process could take as long as six months.

But the gift comes at a good time. Avenidas has an annual budget of $3.2 million, but lost 40% of its funding from United Way this year, and expects more cuts related to state budget woes.
