Buy More Buses Instead of Building CenterLine

Re “CenterLine From Two Vantage Points,” Sept. 1:

For the same expenditure, buses could carry five or six times as many people. This may mean five or six new routes with much more extensive countywide reach than just one train line. In case of an accident or earthquake damage to the right of way on any rail line, traffic is halted until the damage is removed and the tracks repaired. Buses would be detoured to the next available street with no interruption of service.

Although trains travel much faster between stations, the total trip time is frequently longer because of the number of stations, the time between trains waiting at the station, getting to and from the station to home or the final destination. Bus lines are not too far away, while it may take a bus ride (perhaps with a transfer) to get to the train station. One may also drive there, of course, but this too adds to the travel time.
