CHP Arrests Nick Nolte

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Actor Nick Nolte was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Wednesday after the California Highway Patrol said he was driving his 1992 Mercedes Benz erratically on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

The 61-year-old actor, known for his Academy Award-nominated roles in “Affliction” and “The Prince of Tides,” was headed south near Kanan Dume Road about 12:10 p.m. when CHP officers conducting an unrelated traffic stop noticed the actor’s sedan cutting off other cars, swerving and crossing into a northbound lane, CHP Officer Leland Tang said.

After pulling the actor over and administering a field sobriety test, officers determined that Nolte “was under the influence of either drugs or alcohol,” Tang said.

CHP officials refused to comment on Nolte’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the arrest, citing their ongoing investigation. No drugs were found on the actor, although he appeared to be “disoriented and drooling, with drooping eyes,” Tang said.

As officers conducted their tests alongside the highway, a small group of onlookers pulled over and took out cameras to capture the incident on film, Tang said.

Nolte was booked at the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Lost Hills-Malibu station. He was released about 8:30 p.m.
