Boeing Loses Appeal in Military Copter Case

Boeing Co. must pay $19 million for damage caused by a 1991 Army helicopter crash and lost equipment, a federal appeals court ruled.
The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Boeing’s argument that it is not liable for the payment. It is in addition to $40 million that the aircraft manufacturer paid in August 2000 to the federal government and Brett Roby, a former whistle-blower who filed a lawsuit claiming Boeing’s transmission gears were faulty and led to the copter’s crash.
The court ruled 2-1 that the government can recover money for damages from the 1991 crash in Saudi Arabia of a CH-47D Chinook helicopter. All 18 men aboard the helicopter survived.
