49 Killed as Pilgrims’ Bus Plunges Off Road
A bus packed with Roman Catholic pilgrims plunged over a cliff in northern Argentina, killing at least 49 people, including many children, police said.
Rescue workers used rope to drag up corpses and some of the 27 people injured, many in spinal braces, from the bus 100 feet down a heavily wooded gorge.
The crash happened about 10 p.m. Sunday near La Merced, in the poor Andean province of Catamarca, about 600 miles northwest of Buenos Aires. Most passengers were pensioners returning from a shrine in neighboring Tucuman province.
