Ex-King Heads to France for Routine Checkup
From Times Wire Reports
Afghanistan’s former king left for France for a routine medical checkup, state television reported. It was Mohammad Zaher Shah’s first trip out of the country since he returned in April after 29 years of exile in Italy.
An aide said the former king travels annually to France to see his doctor and will return to Afghanistan in 10 to 12 days.
Zaher Shah, 87, has kept a low profile since returning to Afghanistan. He had lived in Italy with his family since 1973, when his 40-year reign ended in a bloodless coup.
