North Korean Lawmaker Hosts Peers From South
Six lawmakers from South Korea held a meeting Saturday with the president of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly, news reports from both nations said.
North Korea said the meeting with Kim Yong Nam was held in Pyongyang, the North’s capital. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said it was the first meeting among assemblymen from the two countries since the 1950-53 Korean War.
The delegation came to the communist North with the symphony orchestra of South Korea’s state-run broadcasting system amid signs of improvement in inter-Korean relations.
“They had a conversation in an atmosphere overflowing with compatriotic feelings,” the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said.
Yonhap said the delegation, led by Kim Thae Sik, deputy speaker of South Korea’s National Assembly, discussed plans to resume talks between South and North lawmakers, political issues and cultural exchanges. The six-member group will end a seven-day trip to the North today, Yonhap said.
