There’s No 7-Eleven Here!: I just had my first wedding anniversary. Since my husband is a doctor, we are not able to go on vacation very often with an actress and a doctor living together. But recently, we went to Catalina and took the Island Express Helicopter. I was so terrified before we got on this thing, but it turned out to be amazing. You just float over the sea.

We decided that we were going to camp for a couple of days. We didn’t know that there wasn’t going to be any shop on the backside of the island where we were camping. We didn’t bring even close to enough food or water or anything. And we were in this campground that was just dirt. So, we pitched our tent and laid out the sleeping bag and then we basically arm-wrestled over the last Clif bar and a couple of pieces of candy. There’s nothing much on the island, but there are buffalo. That blew my mind. You only see them in old westerns and Kevin Costner movies.

The Trip Improves: For the second leg of our trip, we stayed in a little bed-and-breakfast in Avalon called the Snug Harbor Inn and there are only six rooms. They had a shower! Otherwise, the arcade in Avalon has great Skee-Ball, and Armstrong’s Seafood Restaurant has the best ceviche. We just read books and did nothing. It is such a relaxed island. All the people are so nice, and there is really nothing to rush to.

Essential Ingredients: We always cook on the weekends because my husband is an amazing cook, and I’m a pretty good cook. He cooks the best homemade pasta with the full-on crank machine. He also loves to make that Thai coconut soup, tom kha kai, or anything with coconut. That makes him go over the moon. And for me, it’s anything with truffle oil. I could put truffle oil on socks and it would be good. Usually, I put it on heirloom tomatoes that we grow in our backyard and then a little bit of sea salt and a little bit of truffle oil.

Unhurried Pace: I love all the beach towns. They don’t really have a vision of the future or a vision of the past. They’re just about right now. It’s a nice way to escape and not worry about what’s going to happen tomorrow or your skin damage from the sun. Hermosa and Redondo Beach are my favorites. I love to go to play tennis and then go to the Kettle in Manhattan Beach, which is the best breakfast place with horribly unhealthy food, but after you play tennis you feel kind of OK about it. Redondo has the most beautiful beach restaurant, Chez Melange.

Fish and Guilt: Fishing is my new thing. My husband is a fly-fisherman. For him, I organized this little trip to Lake Piru. But I realized along the way that I love fishing. We decided on our first fishing trip that we were going to club other people over the head and steal their fish because we hadn’t caught anything. But then we finally caught six trout in Lake Piru. When we were in Mexico on our honeymoon, I caught this gigantic dorado, which is like a mahi-mahi. I was reeling him in for 45 minutes. And when I pulled him out of the water, I felt horrible. I thought, “This is a creature.” But when you catch trout, there is no remorse. Trout are a little easier for me to stomach than catching big sport fish. I think sport fish are kind of sad.
