The state Department of Corporations ordered a Santa Clarita debt management firm to stop offering debt negotiation services because it allegedly is operating without a license.

Also, the state Department of Consumer Affairs warned consumers to “proceed with caution” before doing business with the firm, Briggs & Baker. A consumer affairs spokeswoman said the warning was a response to numerous consumer complaints received about the company.

Debt management firms work with troubled debtors, negotiating with creditors in an attempt to work out a repayment plan.

Gary Brown, Briggs & Baker’s attorney, said the complaints against the firm are being orchestrated by former employees who now are competitors. He said the firm would comply with the cease-and-desist order.
