17 Killed in Fighting Between Northern Rivals
From Times Wire Reports
At least 17 people have been killed and 23 more wounded in fighting between forces of rival commanders in northern Afghanistan, witnesses and travelers said.
They said the fighting broke out in Samangan province 60 miles south of Mazar-i-Sharif between the forces of commanders loyal to Uzbek warlord Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and his ethnic Tajik rival Atta Mohammed.
Dostum and Mohammed are key members of President Hamid Karzai’s government.
