Central
Baghdad hit: Coalition B-1, B-2, B-52 bombers hit several targets, including the palace of Saddam Hussein’s son Qusai. Allied planes strike Republican Guard positions south of Baghdad.
Closing in: Two brigades of the 101st Airborne Division are attacked with mortar and small-arms fire as they attempt to isolate Najaf.
Civilians killed: Troops from the 3rd Infantry Division kill Iraqi women and children near Najaf when they fire at a vehicle that fails to stop when ordered.
Deadly clashes: Two U.S. paratroopers are killed during fighting in Najaf and Samawah.
