The Air Force Academy is sending the El Paso County district attorney’s office the sexual assault reports that it sought as part of an independent investigation into alleged assaults against cadets, officials said Tuesday.

Assistant Dist. Atty. Dan May said the district attorney’s office has concurrent jurisdiction at the academy under an agreement with the Air Force.

Some U.S. senators have requested an independent investigation of reports that at least 56 female cadets have been sexually assaulted at the academy since 1993.

Dick Wadhams, a spokesman for Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), said Tuesday that he thought Air Force cooperation with the district attorney is a step toward resolution.

The Air Force has opened two investigations into the matter, and the Defense Department has opened a third.
