From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Global cancer rates could rise 50% to 15 million new cases a year by 2020, but one-third of them could be prevented by curbing infections and by changes in lifestyle, and another third could be cured, according to the World Health Organization.

Ending smoking would cause the biggest drop in cancer, while vaccinations against hepatitis B and C and infections linked to stomach cancer and cervical cancer could also make major inroads.

Changes in diet -- especially eating more fruits and vegetables -- would also be useful, the report said.
