Democratic Hopeful Defends Support of War

Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) defended his backing for the Iraq war before skeptical Democratic activists in Des Moines, but said the real test of U.S. policy will come after the fighting ends.

Disputes over the war have spawned deep skepticism among many Americans and other countries, he said, and the U.S. must find a means of easing those concerns. “The way to do that is to be committed to reconstructing Iraq,” he said. “We also ought to make it clear that we are not there for those oil fields.”

Edwards urged President Bush to quickly shift control of Iraqi oil fields to a transitional regime and make it clear that oil revenue will stay in Iraq.
