Comatose Officer Shows Signs of Improvement

A comatose officer struck by a hit-and-run driver showed signs of improvement Sunday, but remained in critical condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, police officials said.
Officer Christopher Chavez, 27, was standing next to his patrol car while assisting in a domestic violence investigation Saturday when he and Officer Leon Maya, 29, were struck near Heliotrope Drive at Beverly Boulevard in the Hollywood area. Maya was treated and released.
