New Struggle in Iraq: ‘It’s the Day After’

Share

Back in January, Gen. Tommy Franks told a reporter: “Anything that this country ever commits her military to has a day before, a day of and a day after” (Opinion, April 13). It’s the day after. And to what are we committed? As we dismantle what’s left of Saddam Hussein’s regime, the information warriors play down the chaos, suffering and aftereffects that dismantling has caused the Iraqi people. The world is watching to see if we live up to our promises. It’s the day after and it’s not nearly over.

I have heard that we have victory in Iraq (“Major Combat Declared ‘Over,’ ” April 15). Victory over what I cannot determine. As invaders on foreign soil, looking for weapons of mass destruction, our goal changed to murdering Iraq’s leader and many of its people. When I see the looks of horror on the children’s faces, and the grieving, I wonder, whose victory is it? And will our lust for power be satisfied after this “victory?” I fear not.

Watch our tanks roll into Syria in search of those weapons of mass destruction, looking for Hussein -- thirsting for power, glory and justification for this unnecessary war. The victory was in making people afraid to speak out against this administration’s policy and its arrogant, undiplomatic posture.

The Iraqi people criticize us for invading their country while at the same time they rejoice and praise us for deposing Hussein. They criticize us for “occupying” their country while at the same time they urge us to do more to police it to keep their own people from looting and pillaging.

By George (W.), I think he’s done it! By talking out of both sides of their mouths while finding someone else to blame for their own failures and shortcomings, the Iraqis are already well on their way toward an American-style democracy.
