Navarro Waiting for World Title Shot
To hear Jose Navarro tell it, he has been “busy but patient.”
A world title shot is a ways off for the super flyweight but he is picking up fringe championships along the way. And he’ll defend his International Boxing Assn. Continental Americas belt tonight against Jorge Luis Gonzalez in the 12-round main event of an HBO Latino card at the Olympic Auditorium.
“I still feel like I’m at the beginning of my career,” said Navarro, a native of South Los Angeles who fought in the 2000 Olympics and is unbeaten as a pro at 16-0 with seven knockouts.
“I don’t have that world title yet but ... they’ve mentioned [a possible shot] at the end of the year, the beginning of next year. I don’t know against who but every champ is a good champ.”
Navarro, 21, is ranked fifth among 115 pounders by the World Boxing Organization and 13th by the World Boxing Council.
He won the IBA belt as well as the North American Boxing Organization junior bantamweight title with a second-round knockout of Carlos Madrigal on Jan. 16 at the Olympic.
“Every fight is important,” Navarro said, “and that’s a good thing, there always being pressure. I’ll just keep doing my best.”
He’ll have to against Gonzalez, who could be his stiffest competition to date.
Gonzalez, 24, of Burbank, is 15-2 with six knockouts.
Also on the six-bout card: three of Navarro’s undefeated Golden Boy Promotions stablemates -- lightweight Mike Anchondo (20-0, 16 KOs) of La Puente, and super middleweight brothers Librado (14-0, 10 KOs) and Enrique (14-0, eight KOs) Andrade of La Habra.
Doors open at 5 p.m., with the first bout starting at 5:30. Tickets range from $15-$100.
