AMMAN, Jordan — Jordanian customs authorities have seized 42 paintings believed to have been looted from the Iraq Museum, government officials said Saturday.
Border officials confiscated the paintings last week from unidentified people entering Jordan from Iraq’s western desert, officials familiar with the matter said, confirming a newspaper report. It wasn’t clear what action had been taken against the suspects.
The artwork was sent to the Customs Department in Amman, the Jordanian capital, where it was being authenticated, the officials said on the condition of anonymity.
Officials at the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, usually responsible for investigating such matters, could not be reached.
