A 21-year-old man was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct for allegedly throwing a cell phone onto Wrigley Field during Thursday’s Chicago Cub game.

Julio Alvarado, who was at the game with a friend, became annoyed with his companion’s cell phone and threw it in the direction of third base at the bottom of the eighth inning, Chicago Police spokeswoman Officer Alice Casanova said.

Alvarado, of Chicago, told police he didn’t intend to hit anyone, Casanova said.

But San Diego Padre third baseman Sean Burroughs said the phone hit him in the right foot.

“It shocked me,” Burroughs said after the game. “It could have been worse, it could have hit me in the head. I was a little surprised to see an object come on the field. That’s uncalled for.”

Alcohol contributed to Alvarado’s behavior, Casanova said.

“It’s not an excuse, but it certainly was a contributing factor. Nevertheless, it’s still reckless conduct,” she said.

Five days earlier, Texas Ranger right fielder Carl Everett was hit in the back of the head with a cell phone in Oakland.
