No Problems for Dublino in Wilshire Handicap Win

Share

There was a happier ending for the connections of Dublino at Hollywood Park Sunday than the previous time.

Dublino was disqualified from first and placed second in a controversial call in the inaugural American Oaks last July 6, but there was no inquiry involving the 4-year-old Lear Fan filly as she won the $111,000 Wilshire Handicap.

Making her first start since finishing 10th of 12 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last Oct. 26, the 5-2 second choice took command in the stretch after a wide rally and went on to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

Owned by a partnership that includes Sid Port, Michael Klein, Robert Geringer and Marsha Naify and trained by Laura De Seroux, Dublino won for the third time in six starts.

Under jockey Kent Desormeaux, she completed the mile on turf in a stakes record 1:33.62.

Southern Oasis, a 7-1 shot making her first appearance in a graded stakes, was second, a length in front of 7-5 favorite Final Destination, who ran into severe trouble midway on the far turn and nearly fell.

Jockey Mike Smith, who was involved in two different mishaps on Saturday’s card, was off his mounts Sunday.
