Andrea Thompson, who left her role as Det. Jill Kirkendall on “NYPD Blue” in 2000 to pursue news anchoring, is returning to the fiction side of the medium. After stints at CNN Headline News and Court TV, she’ll join the cast of Fox’s “24” this fall.

Fox said Monday that Thompson will portray a technical specialist who has “a critical role in dealing with the threat of an ominous terrorist attack.” The show will begin its third season Oct. 28.
