Hurricane Hovers in Baja

Fear turned to frustration Monday as Hurricane Ignacio stalled off the southern Baja California peninsula and residents confronted the prospect of spending another night in shelters.

The hurricane left hundreds of tourists stranded by canceled flights and forced the evacuation of nearly 3,000 people.

Mudslides cut off one highway, and the hurricane’s winds -- with speeds as high as 90 mph -- blew down trees, signposts and power cables.

There were no reports of deaths or injuries, and the fear prompted by the howling winds near dawn Monday gave way to weariness later.

“Some people come in and say, ‘Look, I just have to get back to my job, or my family,’ ” airline ticket counter attendant Mauricio Bautista said. “But most people are calm.”

Ignacio was expected to weaken overnight.
