Remembering the U.S. Contempt for the U.N.

Does Michael Ramirez suffer from memory loss? When his cartoon (Commentary, Aug. 23) showed the United Nations ignoring President Bush’s request for assistance in Iraq, had he forgotten the contempt that Bush and his administration expressed toward the U.N. because it would not support the invasion? Most of the members thought the U.N.’s weapons inspectors could resolve the weapons problem in Iraq, and these members were right.

But the Bush administration publicly ridiculed these members, France and Germany, in particular, just as it ridiculed most of our international commitments. The U.N. was something like a bride left at the altar while the TV cameras were rolling. It’s no wonder that after such a public humiliation the U.N. is skeptical of efforts to reestablish the relationship.
