From a Times Wire Report

A Laguna Beach man pleaded not guilty Monday in a Los Angeles courtroom to charges that he made false statements to federal regulators who filed civil charges against him over oil and gas investments he offered.

John R. Powell, 45, faces two counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing a federal agency’s proceedings. If convicted of all counts, he could face up to 15 years in prison and a $750,000 fine, according to Assistant U.S. Atty. Michael Wilner.

His trial is set for Oct. 21.
