A Hollywood Resistance Draws Ire and Praise

Share

Re “Hollywood Political Event Stirs Up Storm,” Dec. 3: There is nothing more hilarious than a group of self-important, narcissistic Hollywood types gathering in an overpriced hotel room in jeans that cost more than most middle-income families earn in a week to nosh on expensive rabbit food and whine about the course of our country.

Instead of raising $80 million to finance politicians who can then turn to the rest of us to finance handouts that the Hollywood elite feels are appropriate, why not raise that money and use it to subsidize the people and programs they claim to support? That kind of money could make a huge dent in the budgets of many social programs or finance thousands of families living well below the poverty line.

Hollywood liberals may have had an influence on the shallow, hedonistic baby boomers of Bill Clinton and Barbra Streisand’s age group, but they have lost all credibility with the current generation of voters.

This article made my day. What the Bushies do not realize is not only have they created an organized resistance in Iraq with their unpopular war and irresponsible decisions that have an effect on the entire globe, but they have created a resistance movement right here at home.

Yes, fellow citizens, liberal Americans are finally waking up, and I can proudly say that I am one of them. In agreement with the America Coming Together group, I too am against President Bush’s policies, not him personally. Kudos to Laurie David and her group of intrepid resistance fighters.

Your article spoke of the “hostility that many conservatives feel toward what they term the ‘cultural elite.’ ” In fact, the real hostility is coming almost exclusively from the left. Just ask people who work in Hollywood if they dare express their support of their president.

What happened to the inclusiveness, compassion and openness that liberals supposedly had the copyright on? The disturbing level and tenor of the vitriol emanating from the left are symptoms of not having a candidate with the style that the left seeks (i.e., Bill Clinton). When they put up candidates with few ideas and no glamour (Michael Dukakis and Al Gore), they become mean.

Hate does not win elections. As a Democrat, I’m voting for Bush not only because of his bona fide leadership during historically difficult times but because I don’t recognize the people in my party anymore as being either forward-thinking or kind.

You can only wonder how many focus groups and polling calls it took for the GOP to come up with its cloying “They hate Bush” response. A regular soap opera they have going on here.

Personally, I would think that any patriotic American would have a problem with Bush for all the harm he has caused this country, here and abroad. A poor performance in office does have its consequences, even for a president as seemingly remote to personal responsibility as this one.
