Rosanna Davison, the 19-year-old Miss Ireland, was crowned Miss World 2003 in Communist China’s first international beauty pageant, an event that would have once been branded a heretical display of Western decadence.
Showing how much China has changed since the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, officials embraced the contest as a way of boosting the image of the host area, Hainan island, state-run media said.
Davison is the daughter of singer Chris de Burgh, best known for his 1986 hit “Lady in Red.”
