Ex-Leader Gets 20 Years for Embezzlement

Former Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman was found guilty of money laundering, fraud and other charges. He was sentenced to 20 years’ confinement at his luxury ranch, which critics say he built using public funds.

Aleman, 57, was accused of illegally diverting nearly $100 million in government funds to the Liberal Constitutional Party’s campaigns while in office, which he left in January 2002.

Aleman won’t be allowed to serve in Congress for 20 years and was fined about $10 million. Because of reported health problems, he will serve his time at his ranch rather than prison.
