Ex-Indonesian Soldier Guilty of War Crimes

A former Indonesian soldier was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to 11 years in prison, the third member of Indonesia’s military jailed in connection with East Timor’s bloody secession in 1999.
Sgt. Marcelino Soares was found guilty of commanding a group of Indonesian soldiers who tortured and killed independence activist Luis Dias Soares in April 1999. He was also found guilty of overseeing the illegal detention, beating and torture of five others that month.
