The 11-year-old son of a slain politician was found after 3 1/2 years in captivity in southern Russia. The head of the regional anti-kidnapping unit was a suspect in the case, police said.

Dzhamal Gamidov, who was abducted in 2000, weighed just 33 pounds when he was found by chance Wednesday, said Adilgerey Magomedtagirov, the interior minister of Dagestan, a troubled Russian province bordering Chechnya.

The boy’s captors had demanded more than $1 million. He was found during a house-to-house search for the killers of a policeman. The boy’s father was killed by a bomb in 1997.
