An old iron booster

Share

Desiccated-liver supplements have been marketed as a source of iron for more than a century. They’re also high in protein and often many vitamins and minerals, including the B vitamins, vitamin A and sodium. The supplements, sometimes called liver extract, usually contain dried cow’s liver.

Uses: Desiccated liver is used in attempts to ease stress and anxiety, boost energy and performance during workouts, and, less commonly, treat arthritis.

Dose: Manufacturers often recommend about 750 milligrams a day in capsule form, taken in three separate doses, often with meals.

Precautions: Iron overdoses can be harmful to fetuses and young children, so pregnant women and children younger than 6 should avoid desiccated liver. The supplements may cause gas or upset stomach in some.

Research: Desiccated liver contains a form of iron that’s easily absorbed into the bloodstream, but so far no rigorous, large-scale studies have supported claims that the supplement provides an effective way to relieve stress, arthritis or fatigue.

Dietary supplement makers are not required by the U.S. government to demonstrate that their products are safe or effective. Ask your health-care provider for advice on selecting a brand.
