Hotels to Charge Guests 14% Parking Tax
Tourists who pay for parking at the city’s major hotels will soon be paying a 14% city tax in addition to the normal fees, a move that city officials hope will raise $3 million annually for the cash-strapped city.
The fees will be collected thanks to a deal between the city government and the major hotel chains.
The city started informing the hotels last spring that they were legally obligated to charge guests the tax.
The Hotel Council of San Francisco sued unsuccessfully in May, claiming the lodging industry was exempt.
