Community College Spending Is Uneven

The cutting of more than 400 sections from the Orange Coast College schedule this fall is deplorable. Core courses in math, science, English, literature, drama, psychology, history and other terribly important classes are gone.

At about 30 students per section, more than 12,000 student’s plans for careers and academic degree transfers have been seriously affected.

On the other hand, I just received the Coastline College fall schedule in the mail and noticed its offerings: Chinese Brush Painting-Flowers, Chinese Landscape Painting, Chinese Animal/Bird Painting, Stained Glass, Harness Loom Weaving and a class in the Exploration of Needlework are being offered in its art department. There is a class offered called Intro to Yoga, and another in Hatha Yoga.

Both schools are financed by the Coast Community College District.

The obvious question: Why was Orange Coast College forced to cut 400 sections of basic education classes while Coastline continues to spend diminishing education dollars on classes more suited to a hobby than to academic growth?
