Lloyd W. Pellman, lead counsel for Los Angeles County, has announced plans to retire at the end of March.

Pellman, who presides over a staff of about 500, has worked for the county for 31 years and since 1998 has defended the government against lawsuits and given the county board legal advice.

In a letter to the Board of Supervisors last week, Pellman said he was leaving because it was “the appropriate time for me to move on” to spend more time with his family. He could not be reached for further comment.

Pellman came under fire over a series of secret meetings in 2001 found in violation of the state’s open meeting law. But in his letter to the board, Pellman focused on the positives, saying his office had helped generate millions of dollars for the general fund.
