Flooding in central Bolivia has killed at least 19 people and left 40 missing, most of them passengers on a bus swept away by a swollen river, authorities said.

After days of heavy rains, the Chapare River collapsed a bridge about 170 miles east of La Paz and carried away the bus. Rescue crews had rescued six survivors and found 19 bodies.

President Carlos Mesa declared a state of emergency after flying over the area near the town of Villa Tunari.
