Senators Slow Bush’s Arctic Drilling Push

Share

Re “Bush Arctic Drilling Bid Meets GOP Resistance,” Feb. 1: As a former president once said, “Well, there he goes again.” It seems that President Bush is just as obsessed with drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as he is with getting Saddam Hussein. It is reprehensible that many senators would put their own small piece of the country ahead of the destructive consequences of drilling in this sensitive area for such a small amount of oil.

I admire the senators who stray from party lines to vote their consciences -- there are far too few of them! The American people are overwhelmingly against ANWR drilling, but I know that doesn’t matter to the president and his administration of oil executives. If the Senate passes this ridiculous combination of unrelated issues, it more than deserves the contempt in which it is held by so many of us.
