Rare One-Two Punch

With its 86-85 victory Wednesday, USC completed a regular-season sweep of UCLA for only the third time in 61 years. A look at the last two seasons the Trojans swept their cross-town rivals:

Coach: George Raveling had the winningest (24-6) of his eight seasons with the Trojans.

Key players: Harold Miner and Duane Cooper formed the Trojans’ All-Pacific 10 backcourt. Miner, who made himself available for the NBA draft after his junior season and quickly faded into obscurity, is still the Trojans’ all-time leading scorer with 2,048 points.

Comment: USC finished second to UCLA in the Pacific 10, handing the Bruins their only conference losses. The Trojans lost to Georgia Tech in the second round of the NCAA tournament on James Forrest’s buzzer-beating three-point basket -- his first three-pointer of the season.

Coach: Stan Morrison tied his best victory total at USC with a 19-10 record. A year later, he was out as Trojan coach after an 11-17 record in his seventh season.

Key players: Front-court players Wayne Carlander and Derrick Dowell averaged a combined 27.6 points, .532 shooting percentage and 15.2 rebounds

Comment: USC guard Larry Friend, who had two teeth extracted earlier in the week, made two free throws in the final seconds that were decisive in the first overtime game with UCLA. An uncontested layup by the Trojans’ Charlie Simpson with two seconds left kept the second game from going to a fifth overtime. USC went on to finish tied for first place in the Pacific 10 with Washington and lost to Illinois State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
