Grand Jury Assails Diocese in Abuse Cases
A grand jury investigating clerical sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre said church leaders there repeatedly sheltered molesters and fought to squelch the claims of alleged victims.
A spokeswoman said church officials disagree with the report, which said that the diocese’s policy for dealing with abusers was a “sham” and that “aggressive legal strategies” were used to discourage lawsuits.
The grand jury was unable to file indictments against the Long Island diocese because the statute of limitations has expired.
