Malaysian movie censors have banned “Daredevil,” a Hollywood film based on a cartoon character who is a lawyer by day and a vigilante crime fighter at night, a newspaper in Kuala Lumpur reported Friday.

The ban, however, could have little effect, as pirated VCD and DVD versions of the film are already available on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

The movie, which opened in the United States on Friday, has violent content and other “unhealthy elements,” the Star daily quoted officials as saying. They said 20th Century Fox had asked Malaysia’s Censorship Board for a review of the decision.

Almost all Hollywood movies are available on pirated VCDs and DVDs in Malaysia, selling for up to $2.60 apiece.
