George C. Bond, 82; Unocal Vice President and General Counsel

George C. Bond, 82, retired vice president and general counsel of Unocal Corp., died of a heart attack Monday at his home in Pasadena.

A 1949 Stanford Law School graduate, Bond began working for Union Oil Co. of California, now Unocal Corp., in 1955, and served as assistant to the chairman of the board in 1960. Before retiring in 1985, he served 12 years as vice president and general counsel. In 1983, he was appointed to the Fair Employment Practices Commission.

An active community volunteer and leader, he served as president of the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation, president of the Pasadena Library Foundation and director of the Pasadena Senior Center.

Bond was born in Abington, Ill., and later moved with his family to Montclair, N.J. At 14, he became a partner with his parents in Bond Ice Cream Co., which grew from a seasonal ice cream stand to a chain of eight stores in northern New Jersey. A 1942 graduate of Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa., Bond served in the Atlantic and Pacific as a naval officer during World War II.
