Authorities have established security zones around parts of the Golden Gate and San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridges in the San Francisco Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it is the first time security zones have been established in the waters around the bridges.

The zones extend 25 yards from the piers, abutments, fenders and pilings. Unauthorized people and vessels are barred from the areas.

Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Kelly Thorkilson said the decision is, in part, the result of the heightened security alert.

“However, the overall mission is to keep our waterways safe,” Thorkilson said. “Establishing the security zone is one way of doing that.”

The zones, established Thursday night by the Coast Guard and the Port of San Francisco, will be in effect until further notice.

Anyone caught violating the zones could be subject to fines or jail time.
