Re “Admission Studies Find Flaws,” Feb. 11: Many years ago, if a white student and a black student with equal grade-point averages and equal Scholastic Aptitude Test scores applied for admission to college, chances were the white student would automatically be favored over the black student. This was called “discrimination,” and it was “bad.” Today, if a black student and a white student with equal grade-point averages and equal SAT scores apply for admission to college, chances are the black student will automatically be favored over the white student. This is called “affirmative action” and it is “good.” I am confused. Can someone please explain this to me?
