Snow falling along the Grapevine section of the Golden State Freeway prompted the California Highway Patrol to briefly close the highway in both directions Wednesday night.

Sporadic rain also arrived in Los Angeles on a fast-moving cold front out of the Gulf of Alaska, forecasters said.

“We’ve got the big roller coaster out there,” said National Weather Service forecaster Bill Hoffer. “The roller coaster is the cold winds aloft coming down along the West Coast.” He said the storm should have passed through the area by today.

Snow began falling around sundown at elevations above 4,000 feet and the CHP closed the freeway near the Kern County line.

But the snow let up and the north-south artery was reopened shortly before 9 p.m.

In Frazier Park, at an elevation of about 4,600 feet, more than 2 inches of snow had fallen by 8:30 p.m., Hoffer said.

Today should be partly cloudy and dry, he said.
