A consumer’s guide to the best and worst of sports media and merchandise. Ground rules: If it can be read, played, heard, observed, worn, viewed, dialed or downloaded, it’s in play here. One exception: No products will be endorsed.

What: pgatour.com’s TOURCast.

A new way of viewing a golf tournament online made its debut Thursday with the start of the Nissan Open at Riviera. By going to www.pgatour.com and clicking on the TOURCast icon, golf fans can track the tournament graphically, either in real time or by replay.

The subscription service, which costs $9.95 a month, is a joint venture of the PGA Tour and RealNetworks. It was developed by Sportsvision and had IBM as host. The service is also available as part of the RealOne SuperPass, which costs $14.95. The PGA is offering a 14-day free trial and there always will be a free three-hole version.

Users can follow a favorite player or watch one hole in real time, or can replay any portion of a player’s round. An entire 18-hole round can be replayed in two to three minutes.
