CSC Wins $700-Million Army Computer Contract

Information technology giant Computer Sciences Corp. said Friday that it had won an eight-year, $700-million contract to help develop and install computer networks for the Army.

Computer Sciences, headquartered in El Segundo, will provide one of eight teams to work on the $3-billion system for the Army Communications and Electronics Command. The contract also covers aircraft refurbishment and airstrip construction.

The company wants to reduce its reliance on corporate clients, which are spending less on computer services as their own profits slip.

Computer Sciences is a broad-base technology services company and the third-largest in the country, behind IBM Corp. and Electronic Data Systems Corp.

In December, CSC agreed to buy DynCorp Inc. for $950 million to add to its line of government services.

The Army contract will provide rapid support to agencies across the government.

The CSC team is expected to provide a range of services worldwide for the Army, including communications, information technology, aircraft refurbishment and airstrip construction.

CSC, which has about 64,000 employees, reported revenue of $11.3 billion for the 12 months ended Dec. 27.

Shares of CSC rose 56 cents to $31.46 in New York Stock Exchange trading Friday. They have fallen 30% in the last 12 months.
