HIV Vaccine Fails Tests in General Population

VaxGen’s AIDSVAX vaccine does not appear to protect the general population against the virus that causes AIDS, but it may protect blacks and Asians, the company said.
Results from the first-ever trial of a vaccine against HIV show it only reduced the rate of HIV infection by 3.8% in 5,400 men and women considered at high risk, VaxGen said.
In close analysis, the firm said, the figures showed that Asians and blacks given the vaccine had a significantly lower rate of infection than those given a placebo.
