U.S. Admits Suspect Is Victim of Identity Theft
From Times Wire Reports
U.S. officials said 72-year-old Derek Bond, held in Durban, South Africa, for 20 days on suspicion of being a fugitive, was instead what he had claimed to be all along: a frightened British pensioner who was a victim of identity theft.
The retiree, who was on a wine-tasting holiday, said he was shocked by the mistake. The other man using the name Derek Bond, wanted in Texas in connection with multimillion-dollar telemarketing fraud, has been arrested in Las Vegas.
