In the 18 months ending in June, more than 17,500 children who had illegally migrated to the U.S. were repatriated to Mexico, officials reported.

That tally included only those youths who crossed the U.S. border without their parents or who were separated from their families once they reached U.S. territory, the Foreign Ministry said.

Statistics for the second half of 2002 are not yet available.

An aggressive federal program to repatriate children illegally living alone in the U.S. has seen authorities send more than 86,757 youths back to Mexico since 1994, the ministry said.
