Naga Rebel Leaders Say Fighting Is Over
Leaders of one of the oldest insurgencies in Asia said they had agreed with the Indian government that there will be “no more fighting.”
A cease-fire between the government and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland has been in effect since 1997. After three days of talks with the government, rebel leader Isak Swu said: “There will be no more fighting between Indians and Nagas. That is the understanding we have reached.”
For more than 50 years, the group has sought independence for northeastern India, where most of the 2 million Nagas live. At least 15,000 people have died.
